  • ​​Q.  What is a SwimDrive?
  • A. A SwimDrive is a variable speed drive inverter that connects in-line with the pipe work and to a water pump via a cable. It allows the speed of the water pump to vary. This provides fully variable flow of water allowing conservation of energy and adjustable water pressure from jets for the ultimate experience in spa relaxation.


  • Q.  Where can I use a SwimDrive inverter?
  • A.  A SwimDrive inverter can be used for varying the speed of a pump and water flow in marine applications, spas, hot tubs, swim spas, pools, ponds, water features and many other applications. Normally, the SwimDrive inverter will come pre-installed in a spa, hot tub, swim spa or whirlpool bath. Manually or digitally operated SwimDrive inverters can be used on their own with selected marine, pool, pond and water feature pumps. Please ask us for further details.


  • Q.  Why do we want to vary the speed of the pump?
  • A.  If the speed of the pump is varied the operating cost of the pump is reduced. It also gives the freedom to choose the amount of water flow with which the customer is comfortable and happy.


  • Q.  If we reduce the water flow don't we need to run the pump for longer if it is installed to recirculate the water?
  • A. As shown on our technology page the relationship between the water flow (speed of the pump)  and the power consumption follows a cube law. The relationship between the pump speed and water flow is linear. This means that if we only reduce the pump speed by 20% we reduce the power consumption by approximately 45%. Therefore, the cost of running the pump will be nearly halved and the water flow rate will still be at 80% of the maximum flow rate.


  • Q.  Why is the SwimDrive inverter connected to a pipe?
  • A.  A SwimDrive inverter is connected to a pipe because it uses the flowing water to cool the inverter. The heat transferred to the water reduces the overall water heating cost. It is a form of heat energy recovery. Cooling the SwimDrive inverter in this manner is very energy efficient.


  • Q.  Why will the SwimDrive inverter not reduce or restrict the water flow in the pipe if it is directly installed in-line with the pipe?
  • A.  The pipe opening of the SwimDrive inverter is 2.5 inches (63.5mm). Therefore, there will be no restriction in water flow up to a pipe diameter of 2.5 inches (63.5mm). SwimDrive can be connected to pipes down to about 1 inch (25.4mm) in diameter. If it has to be connected to a bigger or a smaller diameter pipe then please get in touch and we will be happy to advise you.


  • Q.  How is the SwimDrive Inverter pre-installed in a spa, hot tub, swim spa or a whirlpool bath?
  • A.  Normally, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the spa, hot tub, swim spa or a whirlpool bath would be in touch with us and we work closely with them to incorporate the SwimDrive inverter in their product. We welcome OEM's to speak with us to achieve full product integration.


  • Q.  Can the SwimDrive inverter operate with existing  spa, hot tubs, swim spas and whirlpool bath controllers in the market?
  • A.   The SwimDrive inverter can operate with existing controllers if Swim Drive has an agreement with those manufacturers of controllers. Please ask us for further details.


  • Q.  Why would a spa or a hot tub manufacturer be interested in installing a SwimDrive inverter?
  • A.  The SwimDrive inverter together with its All-In-One-Pump™ can bring many benefits for the manufacturers and their customers. For a manufacturer the SwimDrive inverter and the All-In-One-Pump™ replaces the 24/7 cycle pump, the filtration pump and the jet pump and simplifies the pipe work. It also provides variable speed functions and massage options. The spa/hot tub product becomes "eco" friendly and can save energy. Click here to calculate energy saving. For the spa/hot tub customer the product offers smooth water flow control and an option for a therapeutic wave water jet massage. The Wave-Water-Massage™ may help relaxation and enjoyment. With smart control of the SwimDrive inverter via the spa/hot tub on board controller, the pump operating cost is reduced without compromise in performance. In commercial spas the operating costs are even further reduced as they normally run longer in a 24 hour period.


  • Q.  Can a SwimDrive inverter operate using sea water for cooling?
  • A.  Yes, some SwimDrive models can operate using sea water for cooling and they can also be made with an IP67 or even IP68 casing. Please ask us for further details.


  • Q.  What kind of pump can the SwimDrive inverter operate?
  • A. The SwimDrive operates a 3-phase pump motor however the SwimDrive connects to a single phase supply. The 3-phase connection is only between the pump motor and the SwimDrive inverter.


  • Q.  Why does the SwimDrive inverter operate a 3-phase pump motor and not a single phase pump motor?
  • A.   A 3-phase pump motor is much more energy efficient than a single phase pump motor. A 3-phase pump motor also costs less than a single phase pump motor of the same power rating. A 3-phase pump motor does not require start and run capacitor/s.  A 3-phase pump motor is lighter and smaller in size than the same power rated single phase motor.


  • Q.  Does SwimDrive inverter come in different colours?
  • A.  SwimDrive inverter can come in different colours subject to a setup charge.


  • Q.  Where can I buy a SwimDrive inverter and the pump?
  • A.  The SwimDrive inverter and the pump can be purchased directly from us or our authorized distributors.
